A Guide To Different CBD Types

CBD is an active organic compound found in hemp. It has been studied for almost a hundred years, and we’re still learning more about it.

CBD is frequently studied for possible medicinal uses. While CBD is recognized as a generally beneficial organic compound, its full effects remain poorly understood. It is hoped that different CBD types may provide the key to relief from various complaints without the need for pharmaceutical products.

Different Types of CBD

CBD is classified into four major categories. These categories are whole plant, full spectrum, broad spectrum, or isolate.

Whole Plant CBD

Whole plant CBD is extracted from the entire hemp flower and attached bracket structure. It is rich in organic compounds and naturally full spectrum.

Full Spectrum CBD

Full spectrum products contain the widest range of organic compounds. That may be why they are often credited with having a stronger and longer-lasting effect than other CBD types.

Full spectrum products can be created naturally, by using whole plant CBD extract, or artificially, by combining essential compounds.

Full spectrum CBD contains a blend of the following components. The ratio of these components will be different depending on the origin of the CBD. Artificially produced full-spectrum CBD will contain what is in the recipe, in specific quantities, in every batch. Whole plant CBD is organically based, and chemically balanced by nature.

Chlorophyll

This compound provides color. Chlorophyll may reduce inflammation and aid with weight loss, and studies show it may have anti-cancer properties.

Terpenes

Hemp contains many terpenes, including:

  • Limonene
  • Myrcene
  • Linalool
  • Bisabolol
  • Caryophyllene

Terpenes may provide support for the immune system and act as anti-inflammatory agents. They could be vital components of the Entourage Effect when combined with different types of CBD.

Flavonoids

These compounds are found in many plant products. They are effective antioxidants and may reduce inflammation and protect the circulatory system from plaque. Research suggests they may be of some help with conditions like depression.

Omega Acids

This group of compounds may help with weight management and support heart health. Research suggests Omega Acids may support mental health and combat age-related mental decline.

Phytonutrients

Phytonutrients include flavonoids, carotenoids, glucosinolates, and other plant-produced compounds. Their presence in this type of CBD helps to make full-spectrum products more beneficial. These chemicals support cardiovascular health and vision, may help bones stay strong as we age, and may fight cancer and heart disease, among other possible benefits.

Phytocannabinoids

These substances are cannabinoids produced by plants. A partial list includes CBD plus the following:

  • Cannabigerol (CBG)
  • Cannabichromene (CBC)
  • Cannabinol (CBN)
  • Cannabitriol (CBT)

Phytocannabinoids interact with the Endocannabinoid System. Among other beneficial properties, studies show they may support mental health. Different types of CBD, and different brands, will carry different blends of these chemicals or none at all.

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)

Full-spectrum products contain a trace amount of THC. Limited by federal law, the amount of THC cannot be more than 0.3%. This is not enough to have a psychoactive effect, but it may show up on drug tests.

Trace THC may play an important role in the Entourage Effect, enabling other compounds to be more effectively absorbed. It may be the reason some people experience benefits only from full spectrum CBD-type products.

Broad Spectrum

Broad spectrum products are designed to deliver CBD benefits without the risk of triggering a positive result for THC on a drug test. They contain compounds found in full-spectrum CBD but without THC.

One way to make broad-spectrum CBD is to process natural broad-spectrum hemp oil in a way that removes THC. The second way is to artificially combine discreet compounds. In this process, flavonoids, phytonutrients, and other ingredients are mixed, except for THC. This mixture is combined with a CBD isolate (the fourth major CBD type) to create the final product.

CBD Isolates

CBD isolates are produced using a complex refining process involving heat, chemicals, and pressure. The result is a nearly pure form of CBD (typically 99% pure or better) that has no THC.

The lack of THC means drug testing is not a danger to users. The lack of additional chemicals makes isolates less likely to trigger an allergic response or side effects. This product is easy to store and transport, is highly concentrated, and mixes well with food and beverages.

Different Types of CBD For Different People

It may take time and experimentation to find the type of CBD product that gives you the best results. Everyone’s metabolism is different, and what works for one, won’t work for another.

If you understand the kind of CBD that works for you, you can compare similar products from different vendors more easily. This will help make you an educated CBD consumer, and more likely to reap full benefits from all types of CBD products.
